The Garden She Tended
My mother loved roses.
When we lived in Festac, a friend of my father’s brought her hybrid rose plants from his farm in northern Nigeria. She became devoted to them—the tending, the waiting, the pleasure of seeing them bloom. Their fragrance became part of how I remember home.
Around that garden are other memories: chilled Ribena after school, tangerines my mother peeled into wedges, the small ways she cared for us.
IFURU grew from those recollections. Rose sits at its heart beside champaca, with cassis and clementine bringing the fruit and brightness of childhood, and ambrette lending a gentle warmth.
Its simplicity is intentional. I wanted to preserve something of those simple times, when my mother was there, her roses were growing, and home was the world I knew.
