Why does a perfume smell different on you than it did in the store?

You know the moment. You spray it at the counter. It is beautiful. You buy the bottle.

By lunch it smells like someone else.

I have loved perfume my whole life. Then my own health journey changed how I thought about the things I put on my body every day. I started asking harder questions. Not from fear. I wanted to know what I was choosing and why.

I asked those questions about skin care first. Then I asked them about the thing I had always loved most. Fragrance.

That question changed my company. Today I compose perfume from flowers, woods, roots, resins, grasses, citrus and spice. And making it taught me what the counter never tells you.

Why don’t most perfume purchases work out?

Most of us buy perfume one of four ways. Each one fails for a plain reason.

1The paper strip

Paper has no warmth and no oil. Your skin has both. A scent on paper tells you how it smells on paper. It tells you nothing about how it smells on you.

2The first ten minutes

What you smell at the counter is the top of the perfume. It is the brightest part and it fades first. The part you live with all day shows up later. By then you have paid.

3The online review

A stranger loved it on her skin. Her skin is not yours. The same perfume blooms differently on every body. Her five stars cannot tell you what it will do on you.

4The safe choice

So you buy the famous one. It is fine. It also smells like half the office. You wanted a scent that felt like yours. You got one that feels like everyone’s.

Everything is made by hand. When one piece of the process slows down, everything waits its turn. We don’t substitute. We don’t rush. We don’t cut corners.
